Shining a Light on Eloura’s Lifestyle Program 👵🏼🎳
At Eloura, the Lifestyle Team is focused on making sure every resident feels connected, comfortable, and valued through careful tailoring of the Lifestyle Program. From bingo mornings to virtual reality sessions, the team offers a wide range of activities tailored to the interests and needs of the residents, with a strong emphasis on community and enjoyment.
“Our lifestyle programs are all about creating those little moments that matter—whether it’s a chat over tea or a virtual reality adventure. We take the time to understand what makes each resident happy, ensuring they feel truly at home and part of something special,” explains Kim Riley, General Manager of Quirindi Care Services.
For Tyson Tolmie, Head of Lifestyle, joining Eloura was a natural transition after working in the disability sector for five years. “After the COVID-19 lockdown, I applied for a job here because my sister used to work at Eloura, and it seemed like a good fit. Aged care was an easy transition, especially with fewer jobs around at the time,” Tyson recalls.
A highlight for Tyson was helping to develop the Virtual Reality program at Eloura, which was featured on NBN News! 🎥

Tyson's role involves creating and reviewing care plans, running a variety of activities, and bringing a sense of fun and engagement to the residents' daily lives. “We’ll start the morning with a game of bingo or cards, always with some friendly banter as residents compete for first place. We might follow that up with a walking group, and in the afternoon, we’ll run a men’s group or maybe a pool competition,” he says. Tyson also engages residents in virtual reality, an experience that allows them to try something new like virtual scuba diving or skydiving. “I’ve always been into gaming, so using VR in my role is incredible. One of my most memorable moments was when we were featured on the news during a VR session—it felt great to know the work we do here is getting recognised,” he adds.
Tyson highlights how the program evolves through regular feedback and consultation with residents. “We regularly consult with the residents to see what activities they enjoy and what we can improve. We also run themed events like our own Olympic Games where the residents can compete in fun activities like a potato peeling competition,” Tyson explains. “There’s so much knowledge and life experience among the residents. I get paid to engage with them, to do the things they love, and to have fun with the most beautiful people in the world.”
Diverse interests are catered for and encouraged, fostering meaningful connections within the Eloura Community!🌿
For Fleur Hamilton, her role at Eloura as a Lifestyle Officer brings together her passion for Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Exercise Coaching. “I’ve recently completed professional development in areas like physical education, coaching techniques, and movement,” Fleur says. “I’m working on expanding the program to include aromatherapy, Montessori principles in aged care, and additional music and art therapy. We already have a gentle exercise group led by 360 fitness facilitator Drew Ronacher, and I’m emulating his positive coaching style to address barriers to movement and daily tasks.”
Fleur acknowledges the challenges that come with the role, but she finds it deeply rewarding. “There’s a misconception that lifestyle work is just fun and games, but it involves so much more—problem-solving, planning, collaboration, and using every emotional, physical, and educational skill you have,” Fleur explains. “The best part is knowing that even in a challenging environment, you’re making it better for the residents.”
At Eloura, a strong sense of community brings residents and the team together, creating an environment where each person feels at home, safe, and valued. 🫶🏼
Fleur also points to the strong sense of community involvement at Eloura. “The people of Quirindi have a real interest in the wellbeing of our residents. Volunteers like Chaplain Winsome Houlahan and the St Vincent de Paul ladies play a big role, providing Christian visits and support,” she says. “It’s also wonderful to see the generosity of the community, especially during holidays when everyone ensures the residents don’t miss out on a gift.”
Tailored Programs for Every Resident
Both Tyson and Fleur agree that the key to a successful lifestyle program lies in personalisation. “We tailor every activity to each resident’s needs, preferences, and abilities,” Fleur explains. “We talk with family members and other health workers to ensure that the activities give them a sense of purpose and engagement, both in the facility and within the broader community.” Tyson adds, “We’re always evaluating the activities to see how they went, if they were safe, and if the residents enjoyed them. We update their care plans regularly based on feedback.”
The Lifestyle Team brings joy, connection, and laughter to each day – from dressing up for special occasions, friendly competition, live entertainment, craft, gardening, card games, pet therapy, and so much more! 🎨🐕
Fleur describes a typical day in her role: “We assist at mealtimes, announce the day’s activities, visit residents in their rooms, oversee volunteers, and organise group and individual activities. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work like researching and prepping for events, maintaining accurate records, booking entertainment and transport, and making sure everything is safe and suitable for the residents.” She adds, “We check in daily with line managers, attend care huddles, and collaborate with everyone from nurses to kitchen staff.”
A Commitment to Quality Care
Kim Riley recognises the dedication and creativity of the Lifestyle Team as central to Eloura’s success: “Our staff put their heart and soul into what they do. They bring such warmth, creativity, and commitment to every day, making sure our residents feel valued, connected, and supported in ways that really make a difference.”
Being part of the Lifestyle Team at Eloura means working in an environment where teamwork and a shared sense of purpose are key. As Tyson puts it, “We’ve got a great team here, and the staff are dedicated to making a difference.” Fleur agrees, adding, “It’s a challenging role, but knowing you’re making a positive impact every day is what makes it all worthwhile.” The team at Eloura is united by the goal of ensuring that residents stay engaged and enjoy their time, creating a space that feels both supportive and purposeful.
